A large freshwater aquarium over 30 years old

Located in Le Bugue in the Dordogne, the Aquarium du Périgord Noir is a huge freshwater aquarium just a few kilometers from our Bergerac campsite. More than 6,000 fish live in its 66 open-air basins divided into different rooms. Built in 1989, it is now the largest privately-owned freshwater aquarium in Europe. It also boasts a reptile park, created in 2009, where several species live side by side. In the most recent area, created in 2020, visitors can even feed baby alligators. Numerous activities are organized for young and old to learn more about animals during your vacation at a Dordogne swimming pool campsite. The Périgord Noir aquarium is housed in a large area called Univerland, where you can also play miniature golf, experience the thrills of the Big Bird aerial course and lose yourself in a prehistoric labyrinth.

Visit the Périgord Noir aquarium

A visit to the Périgord Noir aquarium during your stay at a campsite with direct access to the river in the Dordogne starts with the various freshwater aquariums. You’ll see catfish, pike, sturgeon, carp and many other species of fish, as well as beavers. We then move on to the world of reptiles, offering a veritable journey to the most remote areas of the planet. Alligators, snakes, turtles, iguanas, caimans and lizards are just some of the animals to be discovered. The visit concludes with a visit to the large touch tank, where you can feed carp by dipping your hand in the water – a unique experience for children and adults alike. Animations take place every day, every 30 minutes. They offer the chance to see certain animals up close (alligators, snakes) or to watch feeding sessions (Chilean beavers, sturgeons, carp). These activities are an essential part of any visit to the aquarium.
