Discover how this peaceful river near our campsite in the Dordogne is so well suited to the world’s oldest fish species.
Sturgeons from the River Isle, the source of Neuvic caviar
Over 30 million years old, the sturgeon is now the world’s most famous fish. The eggs of the female sturgeon have become one of the most sought-after luxury products: caviar! Did you know that three tons of caviar are produced in Aquitaine every year? It was on the banks of the River Isle that production of Aquitaine caviar began in the 1980s. And what better way to find out more about this caviar than at our riverside campsite in the Dordogne? The Domaine de Neuvic has three ponds whose water comes directly from the Isle River. In these fish-farming tanks, thousands of sturgeon swim peacefully. They are raised from birth to at least 7 years of age, when the eggs reach maturity. The sturgeons are treated with respect and fed GMO-free feed. Several times a day, they are fed fishmeal from sustainable fisheries. All in all, over two tons of food are distributed daily to the sturgeons at the Domaine de Neuvic near our campsite with swimming pool in the Dordogne.
Quality water for quality caviar
At Domaine de Neuvic, respect for fish and their environment is paramount. The fresh waters of the River Isle are regularly monitored to ensure that they are not polluted. In particular, we check the oxygen levels, so important for the healthy development of the sturgeons and their precious eggs. Every year, the sturgeon are grouped by age and moved to a different tank. A check-up of each fish is also carried out several times a year to ensure that they are in good health and lack nothing. It is interesting to note that the wild sturgeon, or acipenser sturio, cannot live in freshwater. This is why the species present on the Neuvic estate are the famous osciètre and the acipenser baeri, better known as the Siberian sturgeon. The International Union for Conservation of Nature estimates that 85% of sturgeons are now threatened. That’s why it’s so important for fish farmers to care for their fish by providing them with a healthy environment and pure water. Between truffles and foie gras, the production and high quality of Aquitaine caviar further anchor the region’s expertise in luxury products. All these delicacies can be discovered from our campsite near Bergerac.
