Where to fish
in the Dordogne
The great thing about fishing in the Dordogne is that you’ll find both category 1 and category 2 waters. For novices, category 1 waters are home to salmonids such as salmon, trout and char, while category 2 waters are populated mainly by cyprinid fish such as carp, gudgeon and minnow.
In the Dordogne, there are numerous watercourses and piscicultural lakes. Rivers include the Isle (our campsite has direct access to the river), the Dronne and the Dordogne itself. If you prefer to fish in streams, there’s no shortage of spots around our Dordogne campsite, such as the Duche. These small streams are ideal for trout fishing. You can also fish in a lake, pond or body of water in this part of the Périgord. Sleeping fishing requires fewer techniques and less equipment.
The Dordogne is a favorite destination for anglers at heart. You can practise many different types of fishing: jigging, toc, lures, fly fishing, carp fishing and more.
Here are three fishing spots not to be missed during your fishing holiday in the Dordogne:
– L’Isle: the Isle valley boasts a number of certified fishing grounds where you’ll find carnivorous fish in particular.
– Ponds near Montpon-Ménestérol, including Etang de Montpon, Etang de Babiol, Etang des Comtes, Grand Etang de la Jemaye, etc. alcohol
– La gravière de Bergerac (44 km): an enclosed fishing site set in a natural public park.
Fish from the Périgord blanc?
The Dordogne is one of Europe’s cleanest rivers. This makes it a natural breeding ground for many species of fish. Thanks to its many lakes and rivers, the Périgord Blanc is particularly rich in fish. Salmonids , which appeared in our waters around the Pliocene era, are the most widespread and sought-after fish species. Grayling, salmon, trout, brown trout and rainbow trout make the Dordogne Valley an angler‘s delight.
A number of carnivorous species also inhabit the waters of the Périgord. These include pike, zander, perch, catfish and black bass.
White fish (cyprinidae) are well represented: bleak, carp, sculpin, carassin, gudgeon, ruffe, loche franche, rotengle, tench, minnow and vandoise. These fish are less popular because their white flesh is less tasty.
Fishing in the Dordogne also brings you into contact with migratory species such as shad, eel, lamprey and Atlantic salmon. These fish reproduce in the river, give birth to their young and then leave to grow up in the ocean.
Last but not least, the waters of Périgord are also home to crayfish. In fact, crayfish fishing is a popular sport in the region.

Find accommodation for a fishing holiday
When it comes to combining tourism and fishing, there’s nothing better than a camping holiday. Choosing waterside accommodation means you can indulge in your favorite activity without having to travel far. The short distance between the fishing spot and your mobile home in the Dordogne, or your self-catering accommodation, makes it easy to get around with your equipment. Camping on the banks of the Isle, the Dordogne’s richest river, is particularly popular with holidaymakers. It’s easy to find a shady corner of paradise to set down your rod. Better still, you can choose a Premium campsite (with your feet in the water) to be closer to a fishing spot.
The Périgord campsite supports you in your passion by selling a carte de pêche, the key to fishing in the Dordogne. In addition to fishing, the campsite offers a wide range of water sports, including swimming, canoeing, stand-up paddling and relaxing in the heated pool. Other activities include lotto, karaoke, outdoor games for children, etc.
Located in Montpon-Ménestérol, the campsite is ideally situated for visiting the surrounding area. It’s very close to Sarlat and its gastronomic wonders. It’s just a stone’s throw from Saint Emilion and its medieval town. Its position as an ideal starting point for tourism in the South-West is indisputable. The Dordogne is at the center of the Lot, Corrèze, Charente and Gironde regions.
The rules
of fishing in the Dordogne
As elsewhere in France, fishing in the Dordogne is regulated. Before going fishing in one of Périgueux ‘s lakes or rivers, for example, follow the guide.
Possession of a carte de pêche entitles you to fish in the territory’s open waters.
Fishing in 2nd category lakes and rivers is possible all year round. In the first category, fishing is only permitted from the second Saturday in March to the third Sunday in September inclusive. For certain species, the fishing season is much more restricted.
You need to know about :
– The ban on night fishing;
– The no-kill rule or the obligation to release fish alive into the water;
– Theban on fishing for certain species such as Atlantic salmon, sea trout, European sturgeon, lamprey (sea and river), etc.
In the Dordogne, fishing is divided into two domains. The private domain, which includes all watercourses that are not part of the public domain. The public domain is divided as follows:
– L’Isle, downstream of the Pont des Barris up to its entry into the Gironde department.
– The Dordogne, along its entire course in the département, downstream of the Sablier dam, in the commune of Argentat, passing through the town of Bergerac.
– The Vézère, from downstream of the Montignac bridge to where it meets the Dordogne.
