Lascaux 4, replica of the original cave

Lascaux cave, the Sistine Chapel of cave art

In 1940, four teenagers discovered a cave in the Dordogne village of Montignac, a few kilometers from our campsite near Périgueux, that was about to fascinate speleologists and paleontologists the world over. Its walls and ceilings are adorned with animals and other paintings in an excellent state of preservation. The Lascaux cave, one of the most beautiful sites of prehistory, had just come to light. Its deterioration, accelerated by the influx of visitors, led to the original cave being closed to the general public. That said, several reproductions now enable visitors to discover the cave’s motifs without its deterioration. The latest, Lascaux 4, was inaugurated in 2016, just 1 hour from our campsite with swimming pool in the Dordogne.

Lascaux 4, technology meets speleology

Officially named the International Center of Cave Art, Lascaux 4 marks the beginning of a new era in the world of Lascaux. During your visit, you’ll admire a complete replica of the original cave, with all the details of the paintings and engravings for which it is so famous. From the famous Hall of the Bulls to the Apse, the Nave and the Passage, you’ll be immersed in a totally individualized experience thanks to technological equipment such as a 3D cinema and tablets – a unique experience not to be missed if you’re staying at our riverside campsite in the Ardèche.
