Guiose Rum Shop

The history of Rhum goes back to the 15th century, with the mythical “Route des Indes”. Sailors used to preserve their fruits and spices in alcohol. Later, the West Indians replaced alcohol with white or traditional rum. To finalize the recipe, they added fruit and sugar. Come and discover this history from our campsite near Pomerol.

History of Guiose Rums

Passionate about traditional Creole rum-making, Céline and Lambert Guiose founded the“Rhums Guiose” industry in February 2016. Their main objective is to keep artisanal production alive. You’ll find the store at 2 Rue ZI BENTEJAC, 33660 SAINT-SEURIN-SUR-L’ISLE in France. This little boutique is just a few kilometers from our inexpensive campsite in the Dordogne.

What is a rhum arrangé?

Rhum arrangé is a preparation of rum in which multiple ingredients have been infused. It’s an essential and very famous beverage, consumed especially in overseas islands such as Reunion Island, Madagascar and the West Indies. Some of the most famous are: cinnamon rum, vanilla rum, spiced rum, Faham rum, etc. The alcohol content is usually 50°, but this can vary. We sometimes find values between 40° and 62°. The ingredients used for rhum arrangé are fruit, spices and sugar.

Arranged rum

The fruits

Although all kinds of fruit can be used, fresh fruit develops the best flavor and rendering. They should be picked by hand and at just the right moment, so that the fragrances can diffuse and develop to the full.

The spices

The most common are vanilla and cinnamon. Vanilla spreads slowly. It is customary to split the beans lengthwise into 2 pieces. This increases aroma diffusion and speeds up maceration. For cinnamon, the bark is used. For greater variety, other flavors are available, such asstar anise, mint, wood, coffee, etc.

Sugar

This is used tobring sweetness to the rum and develop its flavor. For traditionally produced rums, natural cane sugar is de rigueur. Arranged rum is often confused with punch. Unlike rum, it contains a higher proportion of sugar, juice and fruit pieces. Generally served as an aperitif, punch is stronger than rhum arrangé. Enjoy one of these rums with a view of the river beside our campsite in the Dordogne.
