Périgord, a land of flavours and local produce
Porcini mushrooms
This vitamin- and protein-rich food is a mainstay of Périgord cuisine. In fact, every Périgourdin has a secret cep corner. The two most coveted varieties are the cèpe du Périgord and the cèpe à tête noire. These mushrooms have made Perigueux famous!
Geese and ducks
Geese and duck are a staple of Périgord cuisine, and can be prepared in any number of ways. There’s the famous confit de canard (duck confit), magret de canard (duck breast) and pommes de terre sarladaises (Sarlat potatoes). A major Fest’Oie festival is held in its honor in Sarlat in winter.
Foie Gras
It has made the reputation of the South-West region worldwide, and benefits froma PGI (Protected Geographical Indication). You have whole duck foie gras, pâté de foie and the most prized of all, bloc de foie gras.
Walnuts from Périgord
They were awarded a gold and silver medal at the “Concours Général Agricole” in 2020. A high-energy food rich in Omega 3 and 6, we recommend eating 3 to 5 a day for good health. You’ll find 4 varieties to choose from according to your taste: Franquette (the courted one), Marbot (the traditional one), Grandjean (the typical one) and Corne (the rustic one). An Ecomusée de la Noix (Walnut Ecomuseum ) stands at the foot of the Château de Caltelnaud, where the history and secrets of walnut oil will be revealed to you by a master miller. Caviar de Neuvic Known throughout Aquitaine, Neuvic caviar is one of the region’s must-tries. Thanks to the Isle, the river on the edge of the campsite, the Périgord is an ideal place to raise sturgeon and produce magnificent caviar!
Sweet gastronomy in the Dordogne valley
The Limousin apple
It is the only apple in France to hold the AOP (Appellation d’Origine Protégée) label. Both juicy and crunchy, it has a high taste and environmental quality. You can use it in both sweet and savory recipes (compote, crumble, tart, etc.).
The Périgord strawberry
Strawberry cultivation is fairly recent, dating back to the 1950s. From May to October, strawberry growers produce a quarter of France’ s total strawberry output. The strawberry is a PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) and comes in 8 varieties, including Gariguette, Murano, Cirafine, etc. Every 3rd Sunday in May, Vergt hosts the Fête de la Fraise et des Fleurs (Strawberry and Flower Festival). For the occasion, you’ll find a giant strawberry tart to delight all gourmets.
